ADVENT CONCERT
Advent Concert 2024

What a night. The queue of people who wanted to come to our Advent concert in St. Nikolai stretched all the way down Mönchstrasse in the Altstadt Spandau. The church was packed, with an estimated 570 people wanting to hear us sing Christmas carols in German, English and Spanish. This was despite the terrible events at the Christmas market in Magdeburg the day before.
The moment when our choir member Mariia went to the pulpit and introduced us to the traditional Ukrainian folk song 'Shchedryk' on the violin was particularly moving. 'Shchedryk' tells the story of a swallow that flies into a house and announces good luck and prosperity for its owner in the New Year. It is a cheerful and lively song that reflects the festive mood of the holidays. The melody was later used for the Christmas carol 'Carol of the Bells'. The audience was able to hear both the Ukrainian and English versions. It was a wonderful, stirring, emotional and atmospheric concert that hopefully helped to set the mood for the Christmas days ahead.
We are delighted that in the five years since the Popchor Spandau was founded, the number of people who want to come to our concerts has continued to grow, which gives us a lot of energy and motivation to carry on and become even better. Unfortunately, there were so many people that some had to be turned away at the door due to overcrowding. We are very sorry! You made the effort to come, maybe you were looking forward to seeing us and then you couldn't get in. We would have loved to let you all in, but in order to ensure escape routes and the safety of all those present, we had to limit the number of people allowed in. For next year we will keep in mind that the interest in our concerts seems to have grown considerably in the meantime and we will think about a suitable concept so that we don't have to disappoint anyone.
The Popchor Spandau wishes everyone a peaceful and contemplative Christmas and a Happy New Year 2025, combined with the wish for a more peaceful and safer world. Hope to see you all next year!
Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Merry Christmas and Веселого Різдва!
